The Abe & Marion Schwartz Residence, built in 1964, has been attributed to Hollywood architect Harold “Hal” Levitt. A particularly exuberant example of modernist architecture, the residence is particularly striking from the street with its isosceles trapezoidal piers covered in quartzite. Under the stewardship of the current owners, a sensitive rehabilitation was recently completed (including a new front door and hardware which was reconstructed based on the original design as shown in vintage photos). The interior has been beautifully decorated with period-appropriate furniture and features an open interior atrium. Also showcased is Levitt’s multi-level design and a stunning floating fireplace with vintage tiles. This modernist residence deftly blurs the lines between indoors and outdoors. The Schwartz Residence was recently nominated by PSPF to become a Class 1 Historic Site in the city of Palm Springs.
The Palm Springs Preservation Foundation (PSPF) is a non-profit organization whose mission is “to educate and promote public awareness of the importance of preserving the historical resources and architecture of the city of Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley area.” PSPF offers free membership as a public benefit.
