Historic Sandcliff: Four Views
February 19, 2017 |
3:00 PM, 4:00 PM
Join fellow modernists as you travel through time from 1964 to the present while touring four homes in the Sandcliff complex, designated in February 2016 as a historic district by the City of Palm Springs. In early 1964, the idea of “owning your own apartment” was brand new and Sandcliff was Palm Springs’ introduction to what is now a widely accepted concept: condominium living. The 40-unit community is laid out in pinwheel formations around mirror-image pools and loggias, which have served as social gathering hubs for over 50 years. Mingle poolside for a pre- or post-tour signature beverage and light bites.
Experience the distinctly different vision of four homeowners each with identical floorplans. See how these homes have been preserved or transformed. Ranging from a home with nearly all original components, through two with more modern adaptations and into a live-work artist’s studio, each home is unique and showcases the design and versatility of this “new” concept.
Chat with Sandcliff residents, neighbors and representatives of the Palm Springs Preservation Foundation (PSPF) to learn more about the history of Sandcliff through the years, and its recent journey to historic designation. Included in the ticket price is the scholarly journal “The Architecture of Desert Leisure,” published by the PSPF. Proceeds from the tour will go toward the ongoing restoration and preservation of Sandcliff.
