West Coast Theatrical Premier – Eero Saarinen: The Architect Who Saw the Future
February 19, 2017 | 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm |
Modernism Week is proud to present the West Coast Theatrical Premier screening of “Eero Saarinen: The Architect Who Saw the Future.”
For the first time in a theater on the West Coast, on the largest screen in the Coachella Valley, the full length version of the film will be screened as it’s meant to be seen. Shot in 6K with the latest in drone technology thus providing spectacular aerial tours, the film showcases the architect’s body of timeless work.
The film explores the life of Finnish-American modernist architectural giant Eero Saarinen (1910-1961), whose visionary buildings include St. Louis’ iconic Gateway Arch, the General Motors Technical Center in Michigan, TWA Flight Center at JFK International Airport and Virginia’s Dulles Airport. These structures, along with his modernist pedestal furniture like the Tulip chair, introduced Americans to the expressive delights of the curve, and offered an escape of the rectilinear confines of the modernist tradition.
The documentary takes a personal turn as it follows the architect’s son, director of photography Eric Saarinen ASC, as he visits the sites of his father’s work on a cathartic journey. Eero’s sudden death at age 51 cut short one of the most influential careers in American architecture. Today, Saarinen’s work stands apart and continues to inspire, especially in light of renewed interest in 20th-century architects who exploded the comfortable constraints of the past to create a robust and daring American aesthetic. A co-production of Peter Rosen Productions, Inc., THIRTEEN’s American Masters for WNET, and Detroit Public Television in association with YLE. (68 min)
