Rat Pack Playground—Modernist Homes of Vista Las Palmas Historical Walking Tour (Exteriors only)
February 16, 2017 | 9:30 am - 11:30 am |
In this trendy midcentury tract development of Vista Las Palmas, a knowledgeable guide will lead you past the exteriors of these classic homes where the Hollywood elite as well as ordinary folk chose to live. Early advertising even called the area “The Beverly Hills of Palm Springs.” These houses are affectionately nicknamed “Alexanders” in honor of the developers George and Robert Alexander. The talented team of Daniel Palmer and William Krisel were the primary architects. Although created through mass production, these stunning homes appear to be custom-designed. Many Hollywood luminaries embraced the Modernism of these tract homes when this architectural style was regarded as experimental and avant-garde. Debbie Reynolds, Elvis Presley, Kim Novak, Barry Manilow, and “Rat Packers” Dean Martin and Peter Lawford are some of the stars who lived and frolicked in the “playground.” Some of the desert’s most famous Modernist architectural treasures are also located here, including the Richard Neutra masterpiece, the Kaufmann Desert House.
