Heart of the City Historical Walking Tour (Exteriors Only)
February 19, 2017 | 9:30 am - 11:00 am |
How did a tiny agricultural settlement become a world renowned getaway for the rich and famous and a playground of the stars? Palm Springs is unique in that many of its “founding fathers” were women. Pioneer John McCallum envisioned an agricultural community, and later his daughter Pearl McCallum McManus, alongside other forward-thinking women such as Nellie Coffman, Cornelia White, Julia Carnell and Zaddie Bunker, created an enchanting vacation paradise. In the blocks bordering Tahquitz Canyon Way, you will see the results of their vision, the Heart of the City: site of La Plaza, the Welwood Murray Memorial Library, the Oasis Hotel tower. Stroll along the Palm Springs Walk of Stars. See the original Spanish-style stucco buildings with red tile roofs and arched passageways of La Plaza, credited with being the first shopping center in the country when it debuted in 1936. View some of the city’s first Modernist buildings. Discover this vibrant and historic business center with its exciting mix of restaurants, nightspots, hotels and shopping, all near the oldest existing structure in the city, the 1884 McCallum Adobe, located in The Village Green.
