Thunderbird North is open for the first time during Modernism Week 2018. Unknown to outsiders, it’s one of the area’s most unique resort communities. It was created in 1956 as a mini-resort for a group of good friends and fellow members of nearby Thunderbird Country Club. Ten beautiful custom homes on large lots range in size from 2000-5000 sq ft. Several were designed by famous modernist architects including Wexler & Harrison and William F. Cody. Homes were designed for year-round use, with many featuring luxury finishes. Some have historic site designation and are in excellent, tastefully restored or renovated condition and several of these are included on the tour. They are gathered around a community pool and gardens.
The original owners of this unusual community were mostly wealthy industrialists and businessmen like oilman Monty Moncrief who was a friend and adviser to President Eisenhower, and Jimmy Hines – Thunderbird’s first and legendary golf pro (9-time PGA tour winner). Together they purchased seven acres of a grape ranch from the wealthy Texan developer A. Pollard Simons in order to create their own resort enclave adjacent to Thunderbird.
Funds from this tour will be used to update HOA landscaping, lighting and pool.
