The Desert as Mirror: Reflections on the Void with Lita Albuquerque
February 18, 2017 | 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm |
Presented by Art Palm Springs, this event is included with Saturday’s general admission ticket.
Since the early 1970s, Lita Albuquerque has created an expansive body of work, ranging from sculpture, poetry, painting and multi-media performance to ambitious site-specific ephemeral projects in remote locations around the globe.
Often associated with the Light and Space and Land Art movements, Albuquerque has developed a unique visual and conceptual vocabulary using the earth, color, the body, motion and time to illuminate identity as part of the universal. Her presentation at Art Palm Springs, titled “The Desert as Mirror: Reflections on the Void,” will focus on the concept for her Desert X installation as well as past and future projects.
Albuquerque works in environments and with materials that both question and illuminate the human experience in relation to the cosmic. The scope of her research, which includes projects like Stellar Axis: Antarctica (2006) and Sol Star (1996), performative works involving hundreds of participants like Spine of the Earth 2012 (2012) or An Elongated Now (2014) and an active studio practice speaks to the artist’s pursuit: “I am interested in that impossibility of vision,” she explains, “being able to perceive only what is around us, yet aware that what we are perceiving is only part of a much larger vision.” Albuquerque’s mark making, from the smallest of particles in her pigment installations and paintings to mapping the celestial, suggests her practice as one that functions as a bridge between the finite and the infinite.
