Palm Springs Premiere of The Oyler House: Richard Neutra’s Desert RetreatAnnenberg Theater, Palm Springs Art Museum101 N. Museum Drive, Palm Springs, CA 922623:30 PM - 5:00 PM$15
In 1959, a working-class government employee in the tiny desert town of Lone Pine, California, asked world-famous modern architect Richard Neutra to design his modest family home. To Oyler’s great surprise, Neutra agreed; thus began an unlikely friendship that would last for the rest of Neutra’s life.
Considered the “father of California modern architecture,” Time Magazine put Richard Neutra on its cover in 1949, ranking him second only to Frank Lloyd Wright among America’s greatest architects. The Oyler House: Richard Neutra’s Desert Retreat explores how a man of his stature came to befriend this modest, small-town family, and his love for the home’s stunning desert setting.
Now owned by the architecture loving actress Kelly Lynch and her writer-producer husband Mitch Glazer, the post & beam-style home and its exotic surroundings are simply astonishing, including a stunning pool carved directly into a boulder. The story comes to life through interviews with Richard Oyler, Kelly Lynch, Neutra’s two sons, Dion and Raymond, along with well-known Los Angeles real estate agent Crosby Doe, who has represented homes by some of history’s greatest modern architects.
Modernism Week is honored to have actress and preservationist, Kelly Lynch as our guest for this evening’s screening and for introducing the film and the film’s director, Mike Dorsey, the step-grandson of Richard Oyler.
Immediately following the film will be a Q+A with the filmaker, MIke Dorsey, Kelly Lynch and special guests.
