In conjunction with the exhibit at the Palm Springs Public Library, Matt Burkholz will present a lecture focusing on Hugh M. Kaptur’s commercial and civic architecture design in Palm Springs. Following the timeline of design and construction and with multiple images, Mr. Kaptur’s influence on the streetscape of Palm Springs will be discovered anew.
Hugh M. Kaptur, who was one of the youngest of Palm Springs’s mid-century modern architects, has gained continued recognition and in recent years, a renewed interest for his work. During a trip to Palm Springs in 1956, Kaptur fell in love with the desert and has remained here ever since. From his first project, The Impala Lodge in 1957 and onward through the years, he has been a major force in the Coachella Valley’s built environment, designing over 200 residences, commercial and recreation centers, hotels, fashionable apartment complexes, celebrity homes for the likes of Steve McQueen and William Holden, and even neighborhood-friendly fire stations.
