Walter S. White Exhibition : A Sojourn in the Desert
February 25, 2018 | 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm |
The first exhibition of Walter S. White’s work since the acclaimed 2015 Museum of Art, Design and Architecture exhibition at UC Santa Barbara, this exhibition focuses on White’s influence in the Coachella Valley, the site of his earliest and most adventuresome work. Walter S. White (1917-2002) was an inventor, builder and architect, working in Palm Desert, Palm Springs, Indio and La Quinta in the 1940’s and 1950’s. He addressed the extreme desert climate and the breathtaking landscape using inexpensive and ecologically-sensitive construction methods. He pioneered roof and window designs that were ahead of their time and have been much repeated. This exhibit features drawings and photographs of White’s work in the desert, including the iconic Miles Bates house in Palm Desert and the Franz Alexander house in Palm Springs, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This exhibition is sponsored by The Historical Society of Palm Desert, the Joslyn Center, and the Museum of Art, Design and Architecture at the University of California Santa Barbara
